Resource Description

Fourteen-year-old Krystia and her mother survive life in Soviet-ruled Ukraine and rejoice when the Germans chase the Soviets out, only to learn they have equally harsh new masters. When the Germans execute many Jewish men and send others to work details, Krystia smuggles food, medicine, and papers into the Jewish ghetto, and with her mother hides three Jews in their house, but when they are betrayed, her mother is killed and Krystia, now alone, sets out to find her sister. Based on a true story, this novel is suitable for read-aloud or an independent or literature circle choice to provide personal views on World War II, and to launch discussion of ethics, morality, and one’s responsibility to the community.
