Twelve-year-old Laura has spent years being bullied for her extra weight so her family moves to a new town to give her a fresh start in grade 8. Things start off smoothly and Laura makes two new friends but she finds an elevator in her closet to an underground world occupied by monster crushers and Laura is the latest recruit. Eventually her daytime world and evening secret monster crushing world collide and Laura must learn to accept both her shortcomings and talents. This fantasy novel for grades 6-8 can encourage discussion of many important issues, including bullying, body image, body shaming, acceptance, inclusion, starting a new school, overcoming fears, self-discovery, and self-acceptance.
